30 Days of Buffy: Day 30 - What you think made Buffy so great
Oh now, there's a question without a single answer... but I do have one - but before we get to it I'll run through a few of the other answers that I could have given.
Joss Whedon - I loved Buffy and Firefly, but only bits of Angel and Dollhouse so I might have shrugged off the Joss aspect as him getting lucky - but I can't argue with the fact that most of these highly rated episodes and were written by him. He knew what he was doing with Buffy and Hazel suggests that the problems with later seasons may have been more about him taking his eye off the ball than anything else. The rest of the writers - I'm not one to really notice who wrote what but I can't argue with the fact that a lot of great stories didn't have Mr Whedon's name next to them. Most of the writers seemed to get where to take Buffy... although some got it better than others. The cast - not too much to say but I loved all the major characters at some point (even Riley - he was pretty sweet early on) and while the writers wrote them the cast made them real so a big thumbs up there. The story. A slayer and a hellmouth... perfect... Which brings me to what I think made Buffy so great and the answer is right there in the question... Buffy made Buffy so great... the person who created her, the writers who wrote her and, perhaps easily forgotten but so very important, the actor who turned her into something so real, so sympathetic, so believable, so rock hard, so cool... What made Buffy so great was Sarah Michelle Gellar...
... and we're done... a big thank you to Screencap Paradise who made this so much easier than it would have been (in fact I probably wouldn't have made it to 30 without it).
30 Days of Buffy: Day 29 - Episode you hate that everyone else loves
As previously mentioned I don't really have any insight into what "everyone" likes or dislikes in Buffy so this is another one I'll clearly struggle with. Luckily Hazel has again pointed me at this ordered list of Buffy episodes for my perusal so I'll start reading and stop as soon as I hit one I was less than enamoured with. Sit tight...
Oh... and there it is at #25 - The Prom - creepy and dull and a little bit of an illusion-buster of an episode. Mostly because of the umbrella thing. The umbrella thing was sad and ridiculous and bothered me when I frist saw it and bothers me still. I can't imagine that it ranks as high as 25 but maybe that's all the romantics marking up for the dance...
That was easier than expected.
30 Days of Buffy: Day 28 - Character you love to hate
I'm never really too sure what "love to hate" means... is it like "so bad it's good"? I guess I'd have to go for a baddie and I'll probably have to go for Caleb because he was such a ridiculously over the top baddie that there was nothing to love about him... except that it was Nathan Fillion - so: reasons to hate = many... reasons to love = just the one...30 Days of Buffy: Day 27 - Cutest moment
Lots of cute moments ... and lots of them probably involve Oz because, well he was really cute (and of course cool because you can be both) So here's my favourite as of today from Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered...OZ: But you're not a rat. So call it an upside.
30 Days of Buffy: Day 26 - Favorite Scooby moment
I guess this means an interaction between two members of the gang... and like yesterday's "saying" that's not something that can be easily narrowed down. As dialogue was pretty much covered yesterday my favourite scooby moment will be one that has no dialogue at all... So...Favorite Scooby moment is the lecture hall scene from Hush...30 Days of Buffy: Day 25: Favourite Buffyverse saying
I must admit I'm not sure what a "saying" is ... I see Hazel took "saying" to mean "quote" but it doesn't say "quote" its says "saying" and I don't know what it means...
Anyway - favourite quote it is then - of course Hazel's already picked a stack of good ones and I'm sure with some time and patience I could too - after all it's not as if there aren't plenty - the dialogue in Buffy is often beautiful and funny and sweet and smart so I'll choose one that's only one of those...Oh, listen to Mary Poppins. He's got his crust all stiff and upper with that nancy-boy accent. You Englishmen are always so... Bloody hell! Sodding, blimey, shagging, knickers, bollocks, oh God! I'm English!
30 Days of Buffy: Day 24 - Favourite example of 90s special effects
Maybe I'm the perfect Buffy watcher - too engrossed in the story and characters to even notice the SFX - good or bad. Maybe the mayor going all snaky was a bit rubbish but not enough for me to be bothered but it ... and to be honest I had more of an issue with make-up and prosthetics (erm... shark head!) - so I think I may have to pass on this one too... Sorry.30 Days of Buffy: Day 23 - Two characters you wanted to get together that never did
Oh FFS - I have to say - and maybe day 23 is a little late to say it out loud - but this meme has been pretty damned uninspiring. I'm fairly sure I could have thought up much more interesting discussion points. But this is just the worst (so far) - I mean, was I watching Buffy just waiting for folk to get off with each other - was it a romance... was that all it was? I don't understand the question, and I won't respond to it30 Days of Buffy: Day 22 - Best Xander-centric episode
Blimey! Xander-centric... my first reaction was a great big "huh!?" but then I started remembering things like Go Fish and Teachers Pet and my thought obviously became "best!?" - and then I read Hazel's choice and thought... "Yeah! That was OK" so... and sorry for just leeching of Hazel but you know... best Xander-centric episode will have to be (Xander's Doppelgangland) The ReplacementHopefully some of my own thinking tomorrow!
